Health, Safety, Environment & Sustainability Director - Global Events

Richard Bate is an experienced leader in occupational health, safety, and environmental management, with a proven track record of success in complex technical temporary construction projects and large-scale events. He has a deep understanding of the economic benefits of sound sustainability and safety practices, and is adept at creating, implementing, and updating policies and processes to promote international best practices, ensure regulatory compliance, and foster a positive safety culture.

In the past year, we’ve been privileged to collaborate with some of the world’s most exciting organisations and events:

  • Superstruct Entertainment - Supporting the Global Operations team as Interim Global Director of Safety Management Support, reframing their corporate and regional safety strategies for complex international event environments.

  • Spa Grand Prix (Belgium) - Delivering a full health and safety management system for the Belgian Grand Prix, aligned with F1, Belgian, and EU standards, and providing on-site safety oversight during event build and race weekend.

  • Apple TV+ & Formula 1 - Coordinating high-profile safety operations for both the F1 movie and the Met Gala NYC 2025 activation, including complex logistics such as securing permits to drive an F1 car down Fifth Avenue.

  • Gridserve Sustainable Energy Ltd - Leading the creation and launch of their “ZERO Harm” HSQE strategy, guiding them towards ISO 45001 readiness.

  • Three Castles Rally - Providing long-term safety and risk management support for one of the UK’s most respected classic rally events.

  • ISSA Prevention Forum (Vienna) - Delivering a keynote session on occupational safety in crises, sharing international insights and practical applications to protect workers in high-pressure environments.

FIM E-Bike Grand Prix E-Bike Cycle Racing Series, Worcester, UK 2022 – 2023

Group Director Safety & Sustainability (Director Safety & Sustainability FIM EBK World Cup): Oversees corporate health and safety governance, while ensuring legal compliance. Spearheads series-wide efforts in risk management strategy implementation across the entire organisation. Directs sustainability strategy formulation and execution across the global race series. Provides guidance and oversight for ISO standards maintenance and staff training in OSH and sustainability.

  • Successfully delivered ISO20121 and ISO45001 certifications and built effective HSE management systems.

  • Designed and delivered a safety management system for the EBK World Cycling Series, promoting effective safety culture.

  • Developed and delivered strategic sustainability impact objectives and transformation transportation solutions.

  • Working closely with the FIM E-Sports Commission to develop regulations for eclectic two-wheeled racing

FIA Formula E World Racing Championship, 2015 – 2022

Head of Health, Safety & Environment (Sustainability): Headed all facets of HSE within World Championship Globally. Led creation and implementation of a comprehensive vehicle battery safety management system. Directed and mentored team, administering six-figure budget. Directed overall operations of diverse areas, including legal compliance, corporate health/safety governance, staff wellbeing, travel safety, transport logistics, temporary electrical installations, emergency planning, crowd management, and collaborating with event managers to ensure adherence to planning and licensing requirements across multiple jurisdictions during racing series' global operations. Delivered ISO20121 as part of the world-leading sustainability team on three occasions.                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

  • Created HSE management system for business, delivering ISO45001 and 20121 certifications.

  • Introduced integrated management system across multiple global jurisdictions.

  • Initiated race weekend preparations 7 to 10 days prior to the event, prioritising enforcement of stringent safety standards for on-site contractors, staff, and subcontractors to maintain the highest level of operational safety.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, 2014 – 2015

Senior Q-OSH Manager: Provided specialised construction and electrical safety information to the sales department, focusing on tenders for offshore construction and servicing projects.

  • Designed and built offshore-specific operational sustainability objectives aligned with alternative energy generation.

  • Played a vital role in the development and enforcement of Wind Turbine Safety & Sustainability rules.

Capita Property Infrastructure, 2010 – 2014

Event Safety Consultant: Offered exceptional onsite safety management, training, and supervision at global events, such as London, Sochi, and Rio Olympics, Tour de France, Red Bull Air Races, and WRC. Conducted pre-event consultations, encompassing contract management, production of event safety documentation, logistical planning, and establishment of strong relationships with local authorities.

  • Implemented construction and manufacturing sector safety management systems within a sports environment globally.
